How does target-size image compression work?
For JPEG and WebP, the browser searches a bounded quality range for the highest practical encoded quality at or below the selected byte target. If enabled and quality alone is insufficient, dimensions are reduced proportionally and verified again.
How to use the Image Resizer & Compressor
- Step 1Choose one or more JPEG, PNG or WebP files.
- Step 2Select quality or target-size mode and optional maximum dimensions.
- Step 3Process sequentially, compare sizes and download each finished image.
Formula / How it works
Lossy target mode uses bounded quality search and optional proportional dimension reduction.
Example
Reduce a large JPEG to 100 KB or smaller while retaining the highest practical tested quality.
Image Resizer & Compressor FAQ
Will 100 KB mode produce exactly 100 KB?
No. It targets 100 KB or smaller because encoded sizes are discrete and depend on image complexity.
Why can PNG miss a small target?
PNG is lossless and does not respond to a JPEG-style quality setting. Resize it or convert to WebP/JPEG when appropriate.
What happens to EXIF and GPS metadata?
Canvas re-encoding normally removes metadata such as camera information and GPS.
