Scaled layout — Living room

Manufacturer expansion-gap and joint-offset requirements control. The purchase estimate uses the selected waste allowance and does not claim optimized offcut reuse.

Why plan a plank layout instead of dividing areas?

Area division estimates material, but it cannot show row widths, end-joint staggering, expansion gaps or a narrow final course. This planner calculates those relationships and draws a proportional row layout.

How to use the Flooring Layout Calculator

  1. Step 1Enter room and plank dimensions in metric or imperial units.
  2. Step 2Choose direction, stagger, gap and whether to balance edge rows.
  3. Step 3Review row widths, joint warnings, boxes, cost and the scaled diagram.

Formula / How it works

Usable dimensions subtract perimeter gaps; courses then fill the run with the selected stagger phase.

Example

Balance a narrow last row and compare a one-third stagger against the minimum joint offset.

Flooring Layout Calculator FAQ

Why balance the first and last rows?

When the final remainder is narrow, splitting the combined full-plank-plus-remainder width can create more similar edge courses.

Does the estimate reuse offcuts?

No. Visible start and end pieces are shown, while purchase quantity uses the selected waste allowance rather than an unproven reuse claim.

Which expansion gap should I use?

Use the product manufacturer's requirement for the room, environment and installation system.
