How salary tax works in Australia
Australian resident salary uses a tax-free threshold, progressive rates and generally a 2% Medicare levy. The calculator includes the Low Income Tax Offset, optional HELP or related study-loan repayment and a full Medicare-levy exemption for users who confirm eligibility.
Income tax in Australia
The 2026–27 resident schedule charges 15%, 30%, 37% and 45% above the $18,200 tax-free threshold. LITO reduces eligible income tax, while selected other deductions reduce taxable income before the schedule is applied.
Employee contributions
The Medicare levy includes the individual low-income phase-in and can be removed for a selected full-year exemption. Super guarantee paid on top of salary is an employer contribution and is not deducted from the cash gross salary entered.
Take-home pay example
An employee below the Medicare threshold can have no levy, while a higher-income employee generally pays 2%. Enabling HELP adds the modeled compulsory repayment separately and does not reduce income tax.

Australia salary calculator FAQ
Does marriage or having children reduce Australian income tax?
Australia generally assesses salary income individually. Family status mainly affects Medicare thresholds and family benefits; those family thresholds are not included in this version and benefits are not added to take-home pay.
When should I select the Medicare exemption?
Only for a full-year statutory exemption, such as an eligible prescribed-person case. Partial exemptions, family thresholds and the Medicare levy surcharge require additional information.
How is HELP calculated?
The option uses the current marginal repayment schedule against the modeled income. Official repayment income can include reportable fringe benefits, investment losses and other amounts not entered as salary.
Important financial disclaimer
