How salary tax works in Belgium
Belgian employees pay social security before progressive federal tax, followed by a municipality surcharge on federal tax. The local options model household status, spouse professional income, dependent children, young or disabled child allowances and the municipality's own surcharge rate.
Income tax in Belgium
The engine applies 25%, 40%, 45% and 50% bands after standard professional expenses and the basic tax-free allowance. Qualifying children increase the allowance, a disabled child counts twice, and eligible married households can receive the modeled marriage quotient.
Employee contributions
A standard 13.07% private-sector employee social-security contribution is deducted from gross pay. The income-tested special social-security contribution and low-wage work bonus are not included because payroll-period and household details are required.
Take-home pay example
A 7% municipal surcharge means 7% of calculated federal tax, not 7% of gross salary. Entering a low-earning spouse can also shift part of household professional income through the marriage quotient.

Belgium salary calculator FAQ
Which Belgian municipal rate should I enter?
Use the surcharge published for your municipality; 7% is only a neutral default. The surcharge is applied after the modeled federal family calculation.
How are Belgian children and disability handled?
Qualifying children increase the tax-free allowance, a disabled child counts as two and selected children under three receive the modeled extra amount. Fiscal co-parenting and childcare-expense interactions are not fully validated.
Does the Belgium estimate include benefits in kind?
No. Company cars, meal vouchers, expense allowances, bonuses and employer-specific payroll benefits require separate valuation and can materially change net pay.
Important financial disclaimer
This calculator estimates employee take-home pay using the information you enter and current published tax/payroll rules. Actual payroll may differ because of employer-specific benefits, tax-card settings, local rules, prior-period earnings, bonuses and other circumstances. It is not tax advice.
