How salary tax works in Germany

German payroll combines formula-based wage tax with capped social insurance. Select the payroll tax class, federal state, qualifying children, statutory health rate and church membership so the estimate reflects the main local variables rather than a class-I-only baseline.

Income tax in Germany

The 2026 tariff begins with the €12,348 basic allowance and progresses through two formula zones before the 42% and 45% bands. Tax class II adds the modeled single-parent relief, while classes III, V and VI are withholding estimates; solidarity surcharge and optional church tax are calculated separately.

Employee contributions

The result itemizes pension, unemployment, statutory health and long-term-care insurance. Health uses the entered total Krankenkasse rate, the care calculation reflects qualifying children under an adult-employee assumption, and Saxony uses its higher employee care-insurance share.

Take-home pay example

For the same gross salary, a parent with two qualifying children can pay less care insurance than a childless employee aged over 23. Choosing Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg also changes the usual church-tax rate from 9% to 8% when church tax is enabled.

Tax sources and verification

This adapter is labelled 2026, valid 2026-01-01 to 2026-12-31. Sources were last checked on 2026-08-31. The calculator separates annual liability from payroll withholding and disables payslip mode when the required official method is not implemented.

Germany salary calculator FAQ

Which German tax classes can I calculate?

Classes I to VI are available. Class II models eligible single parents; classes III and V depend on the spouse arrangement, and class VI is intended for additional employment. Final joint income tax can differ from payroll withholding.

How do children affect the German estimate?

They can reduce long-term-care insurance and increase class-II relief. Enter only children who qualify for the selected rule; the annual child-allowance versus Kindergeld assessment is not reproduced.

Why may my German payslip still differ?

Private insurance, midijobs, multiple jobs, bonuses, individual ELStAM allowances and exact payroll rounding need more data. Use the result as a planning estimate, not a replacement for the official BMF payroll calculation.

Important financial disclaimer

This calculator estimates employee take-home pay using the information you enter and current published tax/payroll rules. Actual payroll may differ because of employer-specific benefits, tax-card settings, local rules, prior-period earnings, bonuses and other circumstances. It is not tax advice.
