How salary tax works in Ireland
Irish employees normally pay PAYE income tax, USC and Class A PRSI. The calculator can reflect assessment status, spouse income, a single-person child-carer case, age-related treatment, eligible home-carer or dependant credits and an employee pension contribution.
Income tax in Ireland
Income is charged at 20% within the applicable standard-rate band and 40% above it, then modeled personal, employee and household credits reduce tax. Joint assessment can widen the band for a second income, while the Home Carer Tax Credit is kept separate from that dual-income increase.
Employee contributions
USC is progressive and can use the reduced schedule for an eligible medical-card holder or older person. PRSI is annualized from weekly Class A thresholds and the scheduled 2026 rate change, so pay-period results can differ.
Take-home pay example
For a jointly assessed two-income couple, entered spouse income can widen the 20% band before household tax is allocated to this salary. A pension contribution may reduce taxable income within the age-based relief ceiling but does not remove USC or PRSI automatically.

Ireland salary calculator FAQ
Does the Irish married option use spouse income?
Yes. It tests the widened two-income band and allocates modeled household PAYE proportionally. Separate assessment, transferable credits and Revenue's exact allocation may produce a different payslip.
Which Irish family credits can be reflected?
The model supports the selected single-person child-carer, Home Carer, incapacitated-child and dependent-relative cases where their inputs are available. Every statutory residence, care and income condition must still be confirmed.
Why can Irish PRSI or USC differ by month?
PRSI thresholds and credits operate by pay period, while this tool annualizes them. Reduced USC also requires valid age or medical-card eligibility, and irregular pay can change the official deduction.
