No secondary reinforcement has been added. The main calculator remains unchanged until you add an item.

Laps, stock length and waste

Apply transparent estimating allowances after the measured reinforcement quantity.

Stock-bar count divides total order length by stock length. It does not optimize cutting patterns or individual splice locations.

CalcsBay estimates reinforcement quantities from user-entered reinforcement layouts. It does not determine structural reinforcement requirements, anchorage, lap lengths, bend requirements or code compliance. Always use the structural drawings and applicable project specifications for reinforcement detailing.

Estimate quantities from the project layout

Rebar Calculator

This free reinforcement calculator converts user-defined bar layouts into quantities for procurement and early estimating. It reports bar counts, measured length, theoretical steel weight, lap allowance, waste and approximate stock-bar requirements without attempting structural design.

1. Enter the geometry

Choose the element and enter dimensions, cover and the number of identical elements.

2. Define reinforcement

Enter bar diameters, spacing, layers, main bars, stirrups or ties from the project details.

3. Review the estimate

Compare net length and weight, apply laps and waste, then copy, print or download the PDF.

How to Calculate Rebar Quantity

Determine the reinforced dimensions, subtract the entered cover, select the bar diameter and enter the maximum center-to-center spacing. The calculator adds enough edge-to-edge bar spaces, totals each bar length, converts length to weight and then applies optional laps and waste.

How Rebar Weight Is Calculated

Theoretical unit weight is calculated from the circular cross-sectional area of the nominal bar and a steel density of approximately 7,850 kg/m³. Total weight equals unit weight multiplied by total reinforcement length.

What Is Rebar Spacing?

Spacing is the center-to-center distance between adjacent parallel bars. It is different from bar diameter. The calculator treats the entered spacing as a maximum estimating interval and includes bars near both covered edges.

How Much Extra Rebar Should I Order?

Extra quantity varies with stock lengths, cutting, splice locations, geometry, congestion and site practice. Use the separate lap and waste controls to match the project method. No single waste percentage is correct for every job.

Rebar for Slabs

Slabs commonly contain orthogonal grids. The X-direction bars run along the slab length and are counted across the clear width; Y-direction bars run along the width and are counted across the clear length. Top and bottom selection doubles the grid quantity.

Rebar for Beams and Columns

Beam mode separates top and bottom main bars from stirrups. Column mode separates vertical bars from ties. Stirrup and tie perimeters are approximate because exact cutting lengths depend on bends, hooks, anchorage and project detailing.

Slab Rebar Calculation Example

For a 10 m × 8 m slab with 50 mm cover, 12 mm bars at a maximum 200 mm spacing in both directions and one bottom layer, the engine estimates 41 X-direction bars and 51 Y-direction bars. Total reinforcement length is 808.8 m and theoretical steel weight is 718.1 kg before laps and waste.

Rebar Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate how much rebar I need?

Enter the reinforced dimensions, cover, bar diameter, spacing and number of layers or elements. The calculator counts bars, totals their clear lengths and converts that length into theoretical steel weight.

How much does rebar weigh?

Weight depends on nominal diameter and length. CalcsBay calculates the circular cross-sectional area and multiplies it by a steel density of approximately 7,850 kg/m³.

How many 12 mm bars are in a tonne?

A theoretical 12 mm bar weighs about 0.888 kg per meter. At 12 meters per bar, one bar weighs about 10.65 kg, so one tonne is approximately 93 full bars before rounding, tolerances and waste.

How do I calculate rebar for a slab?

Enter slab length, width and cover, then define bar diameter and maximum spacing in both directions. Select one layer or top and bottom layers. The calculator includes edge bars and reports each direction separately.

How do I calculate rebar spacing?

Bar spacing is normally measured center to center. This estimator uses the clear distance after cover and adds enough spaces so the approximate actual spacing does not exceed the maximum spacing entered.

What is the difference between bar spacing and bar diameter?

Diameter is the thickness of each reinforcing bar. Spacing is the center-to-center distance between adjacent parallel bars. Both values must come from the project reinforcement design.

How much waste should I allow for rebar?

Waste depends on available stock lengths, cutting patterns, laps, geometry and site conditions. The calculator defaults to 5%, but you should enter an allowance appropriate to the project and procurement plan.

Does the calculator include lap lengths?

Yes. You can add a simple percentage or manually enter lap length per splice and the number of splices. The calculator does not prescribe a structural lap length.

Can I calculate rebar for beams?

Yes. Beam mode estimates top and bottom main bars plus stirrups using beam length, section dimensions, cover, spacing and an optional hook allowance.

Can I calculate rebar for columns?

Yes. Column mode estimates vertical bars and ties for one or more identical columns using the entered height, section, cover and tie spacing.

Does this calculator design reinforcement?

No. It estimates material quantity from a reinforcement layout supplied by the user. It does not calculate required steel area, check loads or verify structural adequacy or code compliance.

Is the Rebar Calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is free, requires no signup and performs ordinary calculations directly in your browser.
