From one beam to a complete take-off
Steel Weight Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate theoretical structural-steel quantities from published mass-per-length data or custom geometry. It separates net and order quantities, retains source information and produces editable project files for repeat work.
1. Find the profile
Choose a regional library and family, then search by designation or common alias.
2. Calculate quantity
Enter member length, quantity and waste to calculate total length, weight and exposed surface.
3. Build the take-off
Combine profiles, edit marks and descriptions, then export five structured Excel sheets or a PDF.
How Steel Weight Is Calculated
Published standard sections use the theoretical mass per metre in their source dataset. Custom sections calculate cross-sectional area from idealized geometry, then multiply area by density. Total mass equals section mass per metre × member length × quantity.
Steel Section Properties Explained
Area controls theoretical mass. Ix and Iy are second moments of area, Sx and Sy are elastic section moduli, Zx and Zy are plastic section moduli where supplied, and rx and ry are radii of gyration. Axis conventions follow the source dataset.
Standard Sections and Data Sources
The United States library uses the official AISC Shapes Database v16.0. The European library uses official ArcelorMittal Orange Book workbooks for IPE, HE and UPE. Every export carries dataset and edition notes.
EN 10365:2026 Edition Notice
BS EN 10365:2026 is the current British publication and replaces the 2017 edition. The accessible Orange Book workbooks used here identify their basis as EN 10365:2017, so CalcsBay does not label them as 2026-compliant.
Custom Steel Sections
Custom mode supports plate, flat, round, RHS, SHS, CHS, angle, channel, I-section, tee and hexagonal geometry. Calculations omit rolled fillets and manufacturing tolerances unless they are represented by the entered ideal dimensions.
Steel Take-off and Surface Area
The take-off keeps each member mark, section, length, quantity and waste allowance separate. Surface area uses the available published or idealized section perimeter and may be divided by coating coverage to estimate litres.
Important Data and Design Limitations
Section dimensions and properties can change between standards, editions and manufacturer ranges. The calculator is intended for early estimating and reference. It does not select a suitable member, determine capacity, verify buckling, apply partial factors or replace a structural engineer. Confirm all procurement and design values against the current governing standard and supplier documentation.
Steel Calculator FAQ
How is structural steel weight calculated?
For a standard section, theoretical mass per metre comes from the selected published dataset. Total weight equals mass per metre multiplied by total member length and quantity, with any waste allowance applied separately.
Which steel sections are included?
The embedded catalog includes the complete AISC Shapes Database v16.0 plus IPE, HE and UPE records from official ArcelorMittal Orange Book workbooks. The source and edition status are shown beside the data.
Does the calculator use EN 10365:2026?
No. The embedded European Orange Book workbooks are based on EN 10365:2017. EN 10365:2026 replaced that edition, so current supplier or standard data must be checked before design and procurement.
Why are Australian ASI tables not embedded?
The Australian Steel Institute restricts use of its published section data in commercial software without permission. CalcsBay does not reproduce those tables without an appropriate licensed source.
Can I calculate a custom steel section?
Yes. Define plates, rounds, hollow sections, angles, channels, I-sections, tees or hexagonal bars. The tool calculates idealized area, mass and common geometric properties from the entered dimensions.
What is the difference between mass per metre and total weight?
Mass per metre describes one metre of the selected section. Total weight also accounts for member length, quantity and the selected waste allowance.
Can I create a steel take-off?
Yes. Add multiple standard or custom sections, edit marks and quantities, reorder lines, estimate coating area, and export the result to Excel, PDF or print.
What does Ix or Iy mean?
Ix and Iy are second moments of area about the published section axes. They describe geometric resistance to bending, but they do not by themselves establish structural capacity.
Is the calculator suitable for structural design?
No. It is a quantity and reference tool. Structural design requires current standards, material grades, stability checks, loads, restraints, connection behavior and competent engineering verification.
Does CalcsBay store my project?
The working project is saved in local browser storage for recovery. Downloaded project, Excel and PDF files are created in your browser and are not uploaded by this tool.
